How Many Things Do You Do in an Hour?
Not finish, do.
It’s different.
Doing has nothing to do with finishing.
Neither am I talking about productivity.
I’m just asking — what do you do?
Let’s see...
You walk into the office.
Grab a cup of coffee — if your office provides one.
Sit down, open your inbox.
You start typing a reply —
But a word in that email triggers a memory.
Oh, that call! The one you forgot to make.
You pull out your phone.
Dial.
Done.
Except… now that call adds a new task to your to-do list.
(If you keep one.)
Before you hang up, a colleague stops by.
You end the call.
You listen.
It’s about that meeting you missed.
Because you were in another meeting.
A more important one.
Apparently.
You nod, thank them.
Just then — your phone rings.
It’s your manager.
"Update me on the meeting you attended.
And I hope you got the heads-up on the one you didn’t.
Meet me in five minutes."
You say yes.
You turn back to the email —
But remember:
You had asked someone to get some details printed.
You’re about to call them —
When they show up at your desk.
Printouts in hand.
You take them, still holding the receiver.
Skim through.
“Great job,” they say.
“I was about to walk in with Big B.”
You start heading to your manager’s cabin —
But bump into The Client.
The big one.
The one everyone rolls out the red carpet for.
Even your boss.
He smiles.
You smile.
Small talk.
A nudge.
“Meet the Big B before you leave.”
He nods.
But then — “I’ve got to rush. Another meeting.”
Another meeting.
Wait... you had another meeting!
You rush to your boss.
“Can we do this later?
I need to be there — onboarding the new client.”
“Fine,” he says.
“Just make sure you’ve emailed me the details I asked for.”
Which email?
You place the printouts on his table.
“We’ll discuss later,” you say.
“I’ll send the email right away.”
You run back to your desk.
Which email?
You mutter.
You scroll.
And then — Ah! This one.
The one you started an hour ago.
The one you never finished.
And oh look —
Two files are open on your system.
Annual Business Review.
Proposed Budget.
You smile.
It’s been an hour.
And you ask yourself again...
How many things did you do in that one hour?
